Submitting assignments

The process for submitting assignments will vary according to the requirements of each particular subject. Contact your student support team if in doubt about the correct process.

Assignment handling

Assignments are processed by the OCLC Student Support Unit (SSU) at the Gippsland campus. An assignment tracking system records the movement of Monash off-campus students' assignments (and those of Open Universities Australia.) Assignments can be submitted by mail, fax, or personal delivery to the SSU office. Assignments are then recorded onto the system and forwarded to teaching staff for marking. Following marking, assignments are returned to the SSU office where they are recorded and returned to students. The assignment tracking system records only the in and out process; it does not record assignment marks. The assignment tracking system provides an official record of the receipt and return of assignments.

Note that assignments for some subjects can be submitted online via Blackboard. Students will be advised by their unit coordinator if this is the case. For a small number of subjects, it is compulsory for students to submit their assignments via Blackboard; for example, MGW1010 and MGW2430.

Assignment Cover Sheets

For most Monash off-campus (and Open Universities Australia) subjects, the initial despatch of learning material for each subject will include individually barcoded assignment cover sheets for each assignment task. Please attach the matching cover sheet to your assignment before you submit it. If you have not received a barcoded assignment cover sheet, please attach a sheet with details including your student ID number, year of study, subject code, the semester/term and the assignment number.

Submitting Assignments

You can submit assignments by fax, mail or personal delivery (see details below). Some MUSO units offer electronic assignment submission.
Please use the format described in your unit study guide to put together your assignments. Type or neatly write your assignment on A4 paper, leaving a clear margin on both sides of each page. Please number each page (e.g. Page 1 of 10.)

If you do fax an assignment, please do not mail the original as well unless a staff member asks you to.

We cannot accept emailed assignments.

We should receive your assignment no later than the due date, unless your unit coordinator has told you it is acceptable to post it on the due date.

Mailed Assignments

  • Put the matching bar-coded assignment cover sheet (included with your study materials) in front of your assignment.
  • Staple all the pages together at the top left-hand corner.
  • If you want to receive confirmation that your mailed assignment has been received, please attach the assignment receipt card (stamped and with all details filled in).
  • Mail the assignment to the Off-Campus Learning Centre.
  • You may prefer to use registered mail as a safer way to send your assignments.
  • Always keep a copy of your submitted assignment.
  • Avoid using pins or plastic pockets.

Faxed Assignments (where this is permitted)

  • Fax the bar-coded cover sheet together with your assignment to the Off-Campus Learning Centre.
  • On your fax transmission page include your name, Monash ID number and contact fax/telephone number(s)
  • If any pages are hard to read or missing, we will contact you.
  • Please number all pages and total number of pages transmitted.
  • Please retain your fax transmission report as a record of your assignment submission.
